B.Sc. in Perfusion Technology is a 3- year long, full- time course divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. Perfusion Technology involves the study of physiology, pathology and associated equipment used to support and/or assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during medical procedures.

Perfusion Technologists prepare and operate heart-lung machines and other sophisticated equipment as directed by healthcare physicians. Perfusionists measure blood pressure and other parameters to identify appropriate mechanical, pharmacological and thermal manipulation to maintain tissue viability.

To perform these tasks, the Perfusionist must have a thorough understanding of both respiratory and circulatory systems, and be able to operate complex equipment. Additionally, the Perfusionist must be capable of handling stressful situations, paying great attention to detail, communicating effectively, and willing to stay abreast of new developments in the profession.

B.Sc. in Perfusion Technology: What is it About?

Aside from medical centres, Perfusionists are also employed by individual surgeons, or perfusion companies. Clinical perfusion often requires on-call responsibilities at night, on weekends and even holidays. Perfusionists also work in educational institutions as teachers and/or researchers. Further, some perfusionists are hired by industries that manufacture various perfusion- related supplies and equipment.

The average annual course fee ranges between INR 60,000 to 1,90,000, depending upon the institute offering the course. The average annual starting salary offered in India to successful postgraduates of the course ranges between INR 3 and 16 lacs, depending upon the candidate’s expertise in the field.

Perfusion is the science of providing extracorporeal circulation in order to artificially support and temporarily replace a patient’s respiratory and circulatory systems. Clinical Perfusionists are expert members of the cardiac surgical team, and provide lifesaving support to patients requiring extra corporeal circulation, including but not limited to, major cardiothoracic, vascular and transplant surgeries, as well as support for critically-ill patient.

Their primary role is to conduct cardiopulmonary bypass using a heart-lung machine and other ancillary equipment. They closely monitor the patient’s blood flow and other vital signs during open heart surgery and are also responsible for administering intravenous fluids, blood products and aesthetic drugs.

B.Sc. in Perfusion Technology: Career Prospects

Perfusionists essentially work in operating rooms in hospitals and surgical centres during heart and lung surgery, and in ICUs. Perfusionists keep the surgical team informed of the patient’s condition throughout the surgery. One of the main roles performed by Perfusionist is the operation of heart-lung machines that keep the patient alive during serious procedures such as open-heart surgeries.

Perfusionists are also key personnel in placing and managing patients on ventricular assisting devices as a bridge to recovery or heart transplantation and supporting patients receiving lung or liver transplants.

With advanced education, perfusionists can go in for teaching, conducting research, and working for perfusion equipment suppliers as Sales and Marketing Executives for perfusion products.

Some of the popular professional avenues open to such postgraduates are listed below with the corresponding salaries offered for the respective positions.

JOB POSITION                                      JOB DESCRIPTION AVERAGE ANNUAL SALARY IN INR
Cardiac Perfusionist Cardiovascular Perfusionists operate extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical procedure in which it is necessary to artificially support or temporarily replace a patient’s circulatory or respiratory functions, such as in open-heart surgeries or other heart procedures. INR 12,00,000
Per Fusionist Perfusionists work in several different environments, but they are usually employed by hospitals. They typically work during the week and are frequently on call for emergency procedures on weekends and nights. Individual surgeons and companies that supply facilities with perfusion services employ them in various roles. INR 11,00,000
Medical Case Review Physician Medical Reviewers work in hospitals, physician offices, nursing homes, and for independent auditing firms. They review or audit medical records for completeness and accuracy by looking at various pieces of documentation, since incorrect or missing documentation can result in loss of hospital accreditation, a physician’s license, or medicare status. INR 16,00,000
Pediatric Cardiologist Paediatric Cardiologists care for patients with congenital or acquired cardiac and cardiovascular abnormalities. They evaluate and care for foetuses, neonates, infants, children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. INR 3,00,000
Lecturer Lecturers are responsible for lesson planning, preparation and research, for teaching pupils, and checking and assessing pupils’ work. They undertake administrative duties within a specialist subject area a well. INR 3,40,000
